Big 5! R10,3m. 1 600 ha inside a 22 977 ha big 5 reserve north from Thabazimbi. No buildings. No workers. All busveldt / savannah game including big 5 except lions. Gamefarm: 515c |
The reserve has been in existence from 1989 when the Government was bequeathed ± 10 000 ha from a private land owner, whose father first bought a farm in the area around 1917, and whose family built up the earlier cattle farms and later game farms. Once the Government became owners they relocated scarce game such as sable and roan antelope and black and white rhino to the reserve. The Government bought more farms and also in 1992 invited neighboring farm owners to join and form a co-operative nature reserve. In this relationship private and separate land ownership continues unrestricted, but the operation of the land as one conservation and business unit is formalized: with much the same legal status as a sports club with members, who may receive declared profits or must make good running deficits. At the moment the size of the reserve is 22 977 ha of which is 71% state owned and 29% privately owned (4 private owners).
The reserve focuses on the breeding of scarce and endangered species, and has a proud record with black and white rhinoceros, sable and roan antelope, tsessebe, cheetah and more. The reserve prioritizes sound ecological management of the land and game, above maximizing economic returns. However, breeding of scarce and common game is currently financially rewarding, so that the reserve has built up retained earnings, which over time is plowed back in genetic diversity, bush encroachment control measures, general improvement of infrastructure, and other projects. The reserve's cash flow is positive, and no levies have been paid in by owners in its history. The reserve is fully stocked with game according to scientifically established and controlled carrying capacity: and game is sustainably exploited by game capture and relocation.
The land is flat and unvaried, with no drainage lines or hills, but the bush exhibits very different vegetation types and allows amazing bio-diversity: trees, undergrowth, grass, birds, mammals, reptiles and insects all occur in great variety. The larger game is represented by: elephant 30; white rhino 28; black rhino 8; cape buffalo 24; giraffe 28; eland 477; roan 9; waterbuck 158; Burchell's zebra 60; kudu 947; bluewildebeest 450; redhartebeest 100; tsessebe 125; sable 100; gemsbuck 300; impala 950; ostrich 24; warthog 1 500. Cheetah, leopard, brown hyena, caracal, carvel, civet, aardvark, baboon, vervet monkey and many other small and interesting mammals also occur in great numbers. The reserve lists more than 150 species of birds.
Three main types of bushveldt vegetation: Clay thorn bushveld: on deep black clay soils are very productive, and the tree species on this type is mainly acacia. The soils are very fertile and has a high carrying capacity both for grazers and browsers. Almost every species of plant on this soil is edible. Mixed bushveldt: on well drained gravelly loamy reddish brown soils: also a fertile soil type, dominated by trees that are not thorny: marula, combretums, weeping wattle and round leaved teak. Sweet bushveldt: on deep red sandy soils: characterised by bluehookthorn, camelthorn and sheppards trees, almost reminiscent of the Kalahari, but more productive and dense because of higher rainfall.
The reserve does not present itself primarily as an eco-tourism reserve, and will continue to focus on game capture as main sources of revenue. It will therefore remain very peaceful and quiet, for the real connoisseur of silence. There is currently a single luxury 10bed lodge, operated by the reserve for the occasional visitor. While owners may build and improve their property, they pay a low preferential tariff to use the lodge. The overall ambience is wilderness, isolation, peace.
